Samuel Wells Leland papers, 1845-1876.

Consisting of photocopied volume, c. 1845-1876, journal, with selected quotations, essays, and records of personal expenses; and 2 volumes, 1 Jan. 1851 - 31 July 1854 and 4 Aug. 1854 - 31 Dec. 1865, diary, with reminiscences by date from 1840, re Leland's medical practice at Mill Creek, 1849-1858. Other topics addressed include activities in Columbia, Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, and Greenwood, S.C., and Cartersville, Ga., including South Carolina College commencements, the opening of the South Carolina legislature, and the election and inauguration of James Hopkins Adams as governor; several "affairs of honor" and murders perpetrated in South Carolina; and Leland's limited involvement in the Civil War, including an eye-witness account of the outbreak of hostilities in Charleston and the surrender of Ft. Sumter by Maj. Robert Anderson. Also contains genealogical information on the Leland, Hibben, Edmunds, Reynolds, DuPre, Cater, and Bardwell families and details of numerous births, deaths, and marriages.
